The 25 percent increase will raise tuition from $48 per credit hour to $60 per credit hour for undergraduates, and from $50 to $60 for graduates and law students. USC students are becoming accustomed to tuition hikes, with thp additional snrohflraps hpstnwpH ? o ?" "" on them both semesters this year. It has become embedded in USC students' minds that the faltering economy is the culprit for higher tuition. The South Carolina Education Association, however, has found another reason. Teachers Group President Vivian M. Watson was quoted in The State as saying, "USC's tuition i vint?/\Ar*/\ f/tM r??i wi n in^i cdoc iui ouiiiiiici scuwi uiuy i& \ a blatant act of discrimination against public school teachers."* Watson feels this way because of a state law which requires that public school teachers take two, college-level courses in a five-year period. While it is estimated that over 50 percent of the summer enrollment is composed of teachers, it is highly unlikely that the university enacted tVlic innrooco molininnclir r?r? uiifh MUW \>uuv lliuliviuuutj ) V/l TT1UI any specific group in mind. As a matter of fact, most of the costs are paid by USC full time students. It is hoped that the tuition increase will help curve the loss fhp univprsitv suffprs Hup fn summer school. According to USC Provost Frank Borkowski, no one at th6 university is happy with the tuition for any constituency. The board thought long and hard about how to devise a plan to cope with the economic conditions. They didn't want to raise undergraduate tuition, since the federal loan cutbacks would already be a burden to many students. USC did not raise tuition to purposely harm the public teachers in South Carolina. If the teachers want to "strike" against USC this summer, that would be unfortunate. But the teachers need to realize that the university is not carrying out a personal vendetta against them. They are simply responding to the faltering economic conditions existing in our country right now.
