"The area of personal

Although platonic
relationships have been
important to our society for
years, psychologists have
only recently come up with
effective ways to study the
subject. Davis said the

Davis has been studying
the similarities and differences
between friendships
and romantic love and
also the problems that arise
in male-female friendship
relationships.
Romantic love relationships
demand more support
and understanding than
simple male-female friendships.
According to Davis we
expect a lover to give us his
utmost support, whether it
be encouragement or approval.
But in platonic
relationships the partner
doesn't feel as betrayed if
the other does not give nim
his whole-hearted support.
The romantic love
relationship must have the
element of fascination, the
preoccupation with another
person. It also must have
exclusiveness while the
male-female friendship does
not: a partner doesn't

Davis said men have more
friends of the opposite sex
than women do, but these
nlatnnir relatinnshins are
not as stable as romantic
friendships because partners
form new interests,
move away, get married, or
acquire new friends moie
often in these relationships
than they do in the cases of
romantic love. He said
friendships are often undermined
by their potential
threat to a romantic
relationship.
He said many people feel
there really isn't such a
thing as a platonic
relationship because they
think there is always the
sexual connotation factor
between all male-female
relationships. Davis said he

Although there is no

the number of male-female

number of females working
has affected the mean age
for marriage.
Davis said over the past
ten years, the average age
for marriage has been
postponed two to three
years. The mean age for
men is now 25, and the
