Best-selling Tli By CHRIS H ANDAL Book Critic Perception. How I perceive something is not necessarily now you win perceive 11. Also, now we as a nauon perceive something is not how another nation perceives it. Understanding someone else's or another nation s perception is interesting and it is this interest that makes Gorky Park a fascinating novel. Gorky Park is a murder-myster/spy thriller with a difference. The setting is the Soviet Union and the main character is Russian police detective Arkady Renko. The novel has a Russian point of view; America is the abnormal place in this book while Russia is the normal. It took Martin Cruz Smith eight years to write this novel, I VRRSr ICHEERLI I TRY-OU fZJygxSWg PO py ^ V V r 7>TI7i7P 1982 Model 'eature Friday iriller Checks Readei though during that time he did write other books, including Nightwing. The time spent on Gorky Park paid off. In hardcover, the book stayed on the New York Times Bestseller List for nearly one year. It has just been released in paperback. The details of the novel are what set it apart from other novels of the genre. The book has a sense of place. Smith depicts life in the Soviet Union with such an air of realism that the reader is forced to believe that this is what living in Russia is like. The case Renko must solve is unusual for the Moscow detective: a triple murder in Gorky Park with the fingertips and faces of the victims cut off to hamper idetification. Smith writes: To be blunt, the criminals Arkady arrested were ordinarily drunks first and murderers second, and far better drunks than murderers. TRY -C rvp?: . It is not only the atmosphere and the plot of Gorky Park that drive the novel but the characters as well: Arkady Renko, the Moscow detective dedicated to Russia and to justice; Major Pribluda of the KGB, in some ways no less dedicated than Renko; and Osborne, a shadowy American businessman who has had connections with the highest levels of the Russian government since World War II. )UT DATES: April 19 ? 21 I st Meeting: April 5 H lurry & Get in on it!
