Baseball Team Stiff< USC Head Football Coach Richard Bell put his inaugural squad through the first spring drills this week and his team will be practicing most of the spring under the shadow of Sarge Fry Baseball Field. If things keep going the way they have for the Gamecock baseball team, Head Coach June Raines might consider a petition to have Bell hold all of his practices at Williams Brice Stadium. Injuries might be contagious. Raines' Gamecocks have not only been struck by a scourge of injuries usually associated with the gridiron, but they also seem to be imitating the injury-prone football team of the fall, who struggled to a 6-6 record, partly because of tremendous losses in manpower. He may be out for the season. Second baseman Jeff Swindell, who has a history of shoulder trouble, was sidelined after making a spectacular diving catch in short center field against Augusta College. Tri-captain and center fielder Robby Vollmer has been sidelined because of a severly sprained ankle against Pfeiffer on Sunday. Second-string catcher Neil Fox bruised his thumb badly enough to come out of the game forcing pitcher Don Gordon to bat because regular catcher Chris Boyle was in the game as the DH. "We're kinda banged up," Raines understated. "We ' started five freshman today (Sunday) and that's unusual for a Gamecock baseball club. The unusual may become the usual if the trend continues. Injuries forced freshman footballers such as Kent Hagood and Frank Wright into action in the fall and they responded very well. The same may be true for the hardballers. Three freshmen, left fielder Phillip Wilson, shortstop Kent Anderson and first baseman Greg Morhardt already start for USC. Coming off the bench and splitting time with Swindell at second base is junior Jamey Thaw, but one of the hottest hitters on the squad the past few weeks has been DH Harvey Heise? a sophomore. "We've got to go with some young guys," Raines said, "because injuries are part of baseball." Not football. Gamecock fans hope the hard hitting of Saturday morning scrimmages on the football field won't linger on and drift over the baseball diamond. "Our young guys won't hang their heads," Raines said firmly. "They'll battle and play hard. That's all we can ask of them." But, please feiiows, don't play too hard.
