Have you ever dreamed about being a
volunteer in a third world country? lear- <
ning another culture, meeting new people, i
and helping the needy? According to {
Thomas Moore, the director of Peace Corps ?
recruiting, the 1980s will be the ideal time to l
work with the Peace Corps. i

"Many people ask 'Why should I take two
years out of my life?,'" says Moore, but i
that's a terrible misconception. In the Peace i
Corps you add two years of valuable ex- t
perience. Not only do you learn another i
culture and gain personal value and <
satisfaction, but there are many career
opportunities." Moore continued, "Career i
opportunities are very high in the govern- ;
ment, especially with the foreign service. ^

The Peace Corps is presently having
iifficulties in recruiting people with
igricultural degrees. "We're going to try
ind broaden the requirements so that nonigricultural
degrees can be sent to certain
ocations." Peace Corps recruiters also
leed people experienced in engineering,
construction, water and sanitation, teaching
ind training. "The main purpose of the
Peace Corps is to leave those skills behind.
Ne don't want to promote dependence,"
VIoore said.
Ron Beeson and his wife Gerri, have just
eturned from a two year Peace Corps tour
n Swaziland where Ron trained teachers at
:he Botswana University and Gerri was the
lational coordinator of the society of haniicapped.
4'Many people ask about the dangers of a
/olunteer," said Ron. "Volunteers are
almost immune to danger. The people see us
working for their own good."
Moore said that the Peace Corps is alive
now more than ever. "One reason people
are not so aware is the type of people that do
volunteer. They want to help but don't want
to carry on about it."
