"More than 50 cases for littering were made at the Saluda River rapids by conservation officers last spring when enforcement efforts were stepped up," said a wildlife department spokesman. The state wildlife department is working in close cooperation with the Richland County Sheriff's Department and the Columbia Police Department in the enforcement of litter laws of the Saluda River rapids. "The Saluda River rapids near Columbia have been a popular spring and summer recreation spot," the spokesman said. "However, there has been massive 1 \ 1 Professk S ^ I Theses, Term F | same Ds I 4508 St. Andrews Office F ] I Suite 16. Broken glass in and around the water has caused frequent personal injury. Traffic congestion has also been a problem in this area with cars parked in the road." To nip the littering problem in the bud this spring at the Saluda River rapids, the state wildlife department has assigned officers working undercover to patrol the area for litter law violations during times of heaviest use. During one weekend last summer two officers observed the littering and made a total of 20 separate cases. In several cases the judge ordered convicted litters to pick up trash at the rapids, in lieu of fines, at a rate of one hour per $5 of fine. "The intensive enforcement of litter laws at the Saluda River rapids will continue throughout the warm weather recreational season," a spokesman said. "Individuals using this area for sunbathing, picnicking and other recreation should be aware that if they litter it is in violation of state law, and the eyes of the law may well be upon them." Outdoor enthusiasts at the rapids are also reminded to be alert to warning horns and lights which precede a period of rapidly rising water as water is released from Lake Murray.
