STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ?
With 2:30 left in Monday's
USC-Penn State men's
basketball game, Duane
Kendall took a pass from
Kenny Holmes and scored on
a slam dunk to give the
Gamecocks a 60-58 lead over
the favored Nittany Lions.
The bucket gave USC it's
f:rst lead since 12:01 and
was the product of a
comeback that saw the
Gamecocks fall behind by as
much as 11 (51-40 with 8:37
left in the game).
But the Lions' D wight
Gibson took over and scored
four points in a matter of two
minutes to give the Lions a
62-60 win over the visiting
Gamecocks.
It was an extremelv
questionable call by an official
that took the game
away from the Gamecocks.
With 10 seconds on the
clock and USC down by two,
Gerald Peacock took the ball
on the right side and drove

Peacock's layup dropped
softly through the net and
the whistles blew. Ah, yes,
time for a three-point play.
But, no! The official was
ruling the basket no good. He
was, however, calling
State's Gibson for a foul
before the shot. Thus, no
basket.
"I couldn't believe it,"
Peacock said later. "There
was no way the guy touched
me. Jimmy (Hawthorne)
was getting knocked around
on the other end and they
didn't call anything.
"Thpn thev railed a foul
and he didn't even touch
me."
Peacock missed the front
end of the one-and-one and
three taps missed. Another
whistle blew, this time
Duane Kendall was fouled
with four seconds left. His
first one bounced in and out
and Coach Bill Foster called
time.
Kendall intentionally
missed the second shot and
the ball got tied up on the
rebound. The alternate
possession rule made it

Penn State executed a
basic but unplanned play to |
win the game. g
Dwight Gibson, a 6-0 |
freshman who finished with
13 points, took a pass from
Rich Fetter with : 56 left and
went back door for the game
winner.
"What a way to make a p
living," Penn State coach j
nirlc Hartpr sAiri "South S
Carolina played a superior
game. They do an awful lot
well."
As for the Fetter-to-Gibson
pass pushed the Lions record
up to 14-9, Harter admitted it
wasn't the designated play.
"It ended up with the
result we wanted," Harter
said, 4 But it wasn t the play
we set up.
"Dwight made an instinctive
play. They made a
very good basketball play.
"The first half was the
best we've played all year,"
said Harter.
