GAMECOC Founded 1908 Mark Platte, Editor-in-Chief Jerry Brewer, General Manager Linda S. Haines, Advertising Mana Jean Hatchell, Business Managei Mark McEwan, Production Manage New Alhl( Athletic director Bob Marcum has made it perfectly clear that athletics will take a back seat to the overall goals of the University of South Carolina. That idea is both novel and refreshing. At an informal meeting between Marcum and members of student media, Marcum said he will be onen to anv ideas about the athlptir WI ? / " v program and wants athletes to get the backing of the student body. In Marcum, this university can start all over again. Academics can begin to work with athletics. Students can have a voice in ueiei mining now many nome football and basketball games they'd like to see and support. And although athletics will continue to be self-sufficient financially, there will be a union between the athletic department and the rest of USC, something that has not occurred here for many years. Bob Marcum comes from a school of learning where wins^and losses are overshadowed by unity within the entire university; where the terms ' 'athlete" and "student" can be used interrhaneeahlv where successful athletic programs take time but when they come, are so much sweeter when the entire university can benefit and exult over the achievements. The new athletic director, who has officially been on the job one A Call To The student government is starting work on setting up student committees to speak out against the student surcharge and influence legislators that USC is b' ing lambasted financially through budget cuts. The SG's intentions are noble, but it remains to be seen whether students will meet their end of the responsibility by joining and committing time to this cause. There is no reason to think that legislators' attitudes will be any different than the State Budget and Control Board, which ordered the 2.19 percent cutback for ail state agencies. He wanted to know if night games or day games were more convenient for students. He wanted to know how many home games students would like to see play and in what sport. He questioned why the Gamecock football team doesn't situate its bench in front of the student section of the stadium. He reasoned that players would be more motivated from student cheers than any other. If Bob Marcum's concern for stuaenis is similar to the time he spent asking questions Friday as to what they'd like to see changed, then students can be assured they will be given full consideration wh^n decisions are made which affect them. 1 Finally, there is going to be an I end to the split-house situation that has taken its toll at Carolina for quite some time. The university ?i.*? " * auniiiubii anon can use lis aavice to work together with the athletic department and athletics will try to strengthen the university. Students effort to show they're concerned and impress upon the legislators that the cost of a college education is out-of-hand. If no students or just a few go to work on the committees, it will show that USC students are willing only to talk about what tragedy their financial situation has become but will not take any firm action to back up their talk.
