Once again, William F. Buckley rewrites
history, this time in his latest thriller,
Marco Polo, If You Can.
In his last novel, Who's On First, Buckley
used the launch of Sputnik as the
springboard for an exciting spy thriller and
in Marco Polo, If You Can he uses the

In Marco Polo, President Eisenhower
discovers the Soviets have a mole in a highly
sensitive level of government. How does he
know this? Because Nikita Khrushchev,
leader of the Communist Party of the
U.S.S.R., quoted exactly from the minutes
of a National Security Council meeting.
In an effort to discover the mole, Buckley
reassembles the characters who made his
first three novels best-sellers: Rufus, the
brillant spymaster; Singer Calloway;
Anthony Trust and the dashing Blackford
Oakes. who is allnwpri tn rr>ir>in din A

being forced to resign earlier in the novel.
With each succeeding novel, Buckley's
writing has improved. His plots have
become more realistic and at the same time
more complicated. What separates Buckley
from other spy novelists is the humor he is
able to inject into his prose. Buckley's wit is
keen and he uses it to great advantage.

Early in the book, Oakes is asked wha
quotations he would put on a shrine to FDR
to which he replies, "Well, there's the on
about balancing the budget...Then there'
the one about...er, our boys will never figh
in foreign wars. Er...there's the Fou
Freedoms and the future of Poland..."
In Marco Polo, Buckley uses the time
tested technique of starting the story nea
its conclusion and then jumping back to th<
beginning. The book opens with Oakes in ;
Russian courtroom facing a possible deatl
sentence for spying against the Sovie
Union. Though this is an old method fo
getting the reader's attention, Buckley':
writing skills make this opening successful
not irritating.
What is irritating is the low quality of th<
printing and the high cost of the book.
The paper is cheap, so cheap that th<
printing from one side of the page is visibl<
on the other. Also, the printing is un
necessarily small, causing eye strain. Tin
bottom line is that the book is hard to rca<
for reasons having nothing to do with th<
quality of the writing.
