T^T - rri mot itiei BY DOUG BELL Film Critic W w Reviewing On Golden si Pond poses a problem: how A could any thinking, feeling d film lover find the gall to r< write an uncomplimentary rr remark about Henry Fonda b< or Katharine Hepburn? tr What's the use of nit-picking tt in light of the dozen or so id screen masterpieces Hank w and Kate have given us? tr Don't we owe them too ai much? vi As it turns out, there is no lo reason to worry. Fonda and w Hepburn are professionals first and sentimental icons hf later. They turn in in- th telligent, full-bodied per- de formances that imply craft so rather than magic. w; i,. ^ - V | H JmsBBm HB ; > -' am&m "'3 Ethel (Katharine Hepbur Fonda), and Chelsea (Ja happy moment on Golden P JB A- . On Golden Pond's su ject? the aging and ii minent death of a man \ come to know and like intensifies the sentiment connection between us ai two stars we have known ai rooted for and trusted all oi lives. All of the movie's faul can be traced to what Mi: Hepburn's friend ar teacher, George Cuko unfailing calls "the text." C Golden Pond, originally stage play by Erne: Thompson, is a coi ventional, predictable stor concerning an old on-th< surface grouch, Norma Thayer (Fonda), who bitterly aware and afraid < his advancing age. Whil vacationing with his ei during, encouraging wif Ethel (Hepburn) on thei idyllic summer lake home he is joined by Chelsea (Jan Fonda), his long estrange daughter, for th "celebration" of his 80t birthday. Chelsea bring along her current boyfrienc Bill (Dabney Coleman), divorced dentist, and his so Billy (Doug McKeon). Despite the speed boating thf1 trmit f ichinrf ? ?. The actioi develops with a simplistt ease that is largely ur convincing: Norman an* Chelsea reunite but are stil unable to communicate Chelsea and Bill leave littl Billy with the old folks whil O ? i ? otuaent C-y- ^Gern / mam ^STug A:AAl, JV.I VJcuk (fcmpi Pr.z-cs for bis ( * . Mark Ilydell directs this cozy concoction e with perfunctory d proficiency. e h What the plot lacks in ;s cleverness and subtlety, 1, however, is compensated for a in good acting. Of course the ii casting 01 Henry's real-life daughter Jane as Norman's film daughter Chelsea intensifies the intimacy of the i drama. Though there are a e lot of tears in this movie, the s emotion is never maudlin, n On the contrary, the weeping c seems very deeply felt and is i- undeniably convincing. On d Golden Pond is not Henry's II or Katharine's or Jane's best ; film? not by a long shot, but e it makes me feel closer to e them than ever before.
