Anti-Abortion Wri Upon reading the Pro-Abortion editorial of Monday last I rea' reflected that surely it would elicit comment from students. Que True to expectations Mr. Eric Hedberg appears in met today's Gamecock voicing a tantalizing set of opinions in a P ' manner as frighteningly logical as to appear non-h man. The conclusion we draw from his letter is thp fnlinwinc*- sfor Human beings are completely rational to the extent that all 'n'r our actions are ruled by an unflinching adherence to a r^si systematic logic. <<m) I need not recapitulate the substance of his argument B here? instead I will forward a conntpmrmwini tn thic we ? r" vv conclusion: I propose that the psychological and emotional cp factors that influence us oftentimes prescribe wholly irrational actions, i.e. acts that cannot be logically defended lts j through referral to accepted rules and regulations, but that rea' nonetheless represent necessary steps in a human's attempt P?n towards preserving a state of psychological and emotional [V * well-being. Mr. Hedberg's logical "apparatus" may work well on programmed androids functioning as test-tube mothers, but w?n Q one is given to doubt whether today's women are willing to this accept his opinion of them as the foetus' unwilling waystation mu( to life. He terms the arrangement between the childbearer and the "entity" growing within her as "inconvenient" but a 6iv necessary fact of life. I agree on the last clause but fail to *ate realize the strength of the alluded inmnv*?ni*?nn*? AnH Jc if and necessary to the perfect functioning of Hedberg's logical r?sc apparatus that we refer to the foetus ^s an "entity"? This v'ro latter term introduces the notion tha. the foetus leads a mo* separate and distinct existence and possesses an objective or assi conceptual reality separate from that of its mother. I refuse *10n to accept this as rational? it may find a niche of acceptance '1UIT in a Huxleyan world but our procreation is not a task to be co^] controlled in laboratories. The reader will agree that the 1( # creation human life is largely the province of humans resc themselves, and I ask: Can an "entity," as capricious as a cePj human, function well in Hedberg's ordered and rational " world? His Behavior Model rightly states that the taking of a life is s011) wrong? in fact should be termed murder. Thus; if we should ex's scrub out an "entity" we would be guilty of this crime. The 4.1 r I? " - * - - pi uuiem mereiore ties in wneiner me loetus nas tne rights of an entity as per the definition above. I grant that Hedberg Wrong Opinion Of V ? As a former college newspaper editor, I generally do not ^ complain about the Gamecock. I understand that the problems in running a paper are indeed numerous. However, ^ .j the shoddy reporting of the "Woodland Terrace/University j Inn Escapade" leave me no other choice but to bitch like hell. t ^ The University is painted lily white, a poor, monev-starved institution in dire need of unloading a "no longer necessary" ^av married-student housing complex in order to make more room for the Carolina singles. Evidently, no effort was made ^ea to uncover the other side of this story, i.e., the one which j T would have been told by the residents of Woodland Terrace. 2 c ? Conditions at the Terrace are not quite as ridiculous as 3' ^ Editor Ma"k Platte portrayed them in a column earlier this week. If he saw garbage-lined streets, he must've been here lr when two trash trucks collided. I've lived here since March, a^c and, to my knowledge, the streets have never been lined with t0 I garbage. ^ mo What Platte, Administrator Chris Vlahoplus and whoever our it is that really runs things at USC seem to have failed to not realizejs that the majority of people at the Terrace are there Teri I 'l&SSi! r wwBgui 11 wi ^ klUp WCOMPANy tRlep To AMP ALL IT FOUND W y- U/"tf o... ^m)Mnn.l ^OMBPcW Knowth HoLe IN' _ -? - - / pr V/l ?K.IV/|?*C/U lizes that the crux of the matter is revealed by this MARK stion, and he utilizes an example bordering on rational .. aphysics, a contradiction in terms, to illustrate the blem: Exactly where, he asks, "on a time-axis located in space-time continuum" does a foetus achieve the tran- wmmammmmmKmmmm mation from non-entity to entity?
