Dr. Reinhold Josef Engelmayer, an associate professor of
anthropology and sociology at the University of South
Carolina's Coastal Carolina campus in Conway, died in the
People's Republic of China during the weekend.
Engelmayer, 41, was a member of USC's first exchange
delegation of five students and four faculty members to
Shanxi Province in northern China.
The Myrtle Beach resident died in his sleep Saturday night
or Sunday morning while on an overnight train trip from the
city of Chengtu (Qengtu) in Szecwan Province to Chungking
(Qungqing) with tive other members of the USC delegation,
according to university officials.
They said Engelmayer died of natural causes, but the
specific cause of death had not been determined by Monday.

From 1966 to 1969 he was assistant director and curator in
the Department of Physical Anthropology at the Museum of
Natural History in Vienna, and from 1961 to 1965 he served as
a field archeologist for the United Nations in Egypt.
Engelmayer received his Ph.D. in prehistory (magna cum
laude)from the University of Innsbruck, Austria, in 1969, and
an A.B.D. degree (comparable to a master's degree) in
physical anthropology from the University of Vienna in l%7.
In addition to his work in China, Engelmayer did ar- O
cheological and physical-anthropological research in C entral
and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean. Near East, North
Africa, the United States and in Latin American countries.
He was the author of three books and other scholar'y
publications
