Cooper travels a road that Burt Reynolds was once king of: the rural chase movie with all the customary ingredients: pleasant scenery, pretty girls, wily pursuers and redneck music. Burt seems to have temporarily abdicated his throne and Treat Williams replaces him comfortably as 11 the "folk hero" of the title. The inovie offers a y| routinely entertaining explanation for an actual jijH mystery. On Thanksgiving ! Eve, 1971, a man calling | I himself D.B. Treat Williams' Cooper is a happy-go-lucky aaveniurer, as lrresponsioie as he is likeable. Seeking to regain his wife's (Kathryn Harrold) good graces, he pulls his heroic (but nonetheless criminal) stunt in order to get enough money to treat her to a long vacation. WHEN HE lands unnoticed, Williams thinks he's home free. What he doesn't count on is his old army sergeant (Robert Duvall), now an insurance investigator, smelling out his trail. Duvall moves in and the chase is on: over river rapids, on highways, on horseback, in the air, etc., etc., etc. A problem with the script is that it relies too facilely on coincidence. That Williams and Duvall were antagonists in the army ten years prior to the events in the movie is fine; indeed, part of the movie's meaning springs from that fact. But then to inject into the chase as a foil a bumbling idiot (Paul Gleason) who also happened to have been in the same army outfit as Williams and Duvall is stretching it a bit. As movies of this sort go, The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper is mediocre. It does have the benefit of good actors ? better than it deserves. Treat Williams seems to genuinely enjoy the horsing ) tl. K j ir' A Ri dneck around, but Robert Duvall is detectably ill-at-ease and out of place. After a string of very strong, very demanding roles, Duvall deserves a vacation like D.B. Cooper. But especially after the blustery intensity of such characters as Colonel Kilgore in Apocalypse, Now and Bull Meechum in The Great Santini, Duvall seems disappointingly diminished and unconvincing in this comparatively meager role.
