The Greeks demonstrated their deep concern over their country's affairs by turning out in large numbers for the elections. Nearly 80 percent of those eligible to vote did so. PASOK garnered 48 percent of the votes and 174 of the 300 seats in parliament while its main opponent and incumbent party, the New Democracy, managed to capture 36 percent of the turnout and 113 seats. A possible worrisome note was the sup port given to the Communists, the only other party to gather any meaningful number of ballots. They won almost 11 percent of the votes. PASOK emerged with a comfortable majority in parliament, and voting strength in both the urban and rural areas of the country. New Democracy's leader George Rallis played hard on the foreign factor, conjuring up an image of danger from the left in the C r r> a nr?Tr -i ? * luriii ui r-/vaur\. s prociaimea program 01 reassessing Greece's ties with the West. By the end of the campaign, however, Papandreou had clearly toned down the foreign problem. He concentrated on the domestic economic difficulties of the country. By voting PASOK into power, the electorate expressed its fears about the economic state of the nation rather than any outright repudiation of Greece's foreign [ PIZZA I [ 14 OZ. But it is Papandreou's foreign policj stand that has brought the greatest ap prehension among U.S. government anc military officials. Ever since the disastrous events on Cyprus in the summer of 1974 when Turkish troops occupied a large poruon 01 mai lsiana, reiauons oeiweer Washington and Athens have been problem ridden. Greece's new premier has made clear his opposition to nuclear weapons being placec in Europe by whatever side. He also has repeatedly voiced his unhappiness with NATO and the status of U.S. military in stallations in his country. The former stance is an outgrowth of Papandreou's recognition of the destructive potential that now exists in the world; the latter is a perception thai Greece's national interests have not been served by these alliances vis-a-vis what he sees as the main threat to his country, Turkey. Nevertheless, Papandreou has not been lacking in his appreciation of the realities of world power politics. Recognizing the role of the U.S. in a world of super powers, the new prime minister has made clear that he will not anu linilatornl oolinn ..vv VMI?V UilllUVVl U A UVV1V11 A CgUi Ul&lg Greece's obligations. Rather he has called for negotiations on these issues in which he likely will try to strike a better bargain. Behind this position is the driving concern that Greek interests, especially in military matters, be placed on a par with those of Turkey by the United States.
