TTiere are a small group of men appearing in college football press boxes across the nation. They usually wear brightly colored monogramed jackets, patterned ties, nametags, and spend time smiling, exchanging small talk and putting small stickers on lapels. It's bowl time again, v Most bowl representatives lead double lives during the late fall-early winter portion of the year. During the week they function as businessman, community leaders, politicians or merchants. But come Saturday, bowl officials are likely to be in Norman, Okla., Ann Arbor, Mich., State College, Penn., or coiumuia, Two representatives of the HaiJ of Fame Bowl and one from Uie Peach Bowl were at Williams-Brice Stadium for the USC-N.C. State game this past Saturday. Coy Collinsworth and Robert W. Fennell of the Hall of Fame Bowl spent most of their time handing out lapel-stickers and conversing with the media before they watched the Gamecocks stumble their way to a 20-12 win. vAiuiiiswui ui, (ncaiuciii vn urc iiau ui r awir duwi V/Uihmittee, said the project is a year-round job conducted by the committee as a whole and a selection committee. Planning begins in January for the Birmingham, Ala., game starting with a self-critique of the previous game. Plans are then coordinated for the coming year and entertainment is arranged. During the football season teams are scouted (as many as 12 Hall of Fame representatives are spread across the country on any given weekend) and the goal of a superior matchup sought. There are only three paid staff members Coll ins worth said. So the majority of committee members do it for fun. "That's what everyone does it for," CoMInsworth said before the game Saturday. There are many reasons to stai'e a bowl contest. The Hall of Fame Bowl was an unfulfilled ideu for eleven years before it became a reality in 1977. Its p-ofitv i?o to benefit the College Football Hall of Fame, but there art jther benefits according to Colli nsworth. Sports Editor gni "It's (bowl game) good for the community and it's good for college football." Getting an attractive matchup requires good teams. Collinsworth said two desirable attributes of a possible choice are a good won-loss record and exciting players. "We want to pick a game that will be a good show for the fans," Collins worth said. "The won-loss record is certainly a factor for every bowl." Working 011 a bowl committee is not always a glamorous task despite the fringe benefits of watching some of the nations' top teams and associating with outstanding players and coaches. Besides the burden of extensive travel, the time away from home, and the pressure that this 'second job' can bring, selection day itself can be hard on your heart. Multitudes ot possibilities still exist up until the final Saturday of play when bowl bids are extended, and representatives must be ready with a plan for almost any turn of events. Even now. bowl officials have to look for hints and signs of welcome or indifference to gauge how they are accepted. And the most sought after teams don't always win on selection Saturday to earn a bid. "I had an invitation in my coat pocket once and had to bring it home with me," Collinsworth said. At 5:00 p.m. on Nov. 21 everything will come together "by g. magic" according tc Fennell. ' Until that time bowl officials ha veto rely upon the feelings and attitude of the schools under consideration. Conference calls will be held and decisions made quickly but it's unusual for a representative to reach that point without a good idea of who will be selected. Barring upsets, of course. Three years ago the president of the Hall of Fame Bowl committee suffered a heart attack and died on the day of the decision. But usually the only side effects are some extra gray hair or perhaps a couple of less falls to enjoy football. The Hall of Fame people admittedly lean towardpittingatop Southeastern confernce school against another fine team. But USC brought a lot of fans and money to Birmingham in 1979 and that's something bowl officials don't forget. And speaking of money, the Hall of Fame Bowl has upped their payoff to $400,000 this year. Add the fact that Saturday was Homecoming for Fennell, a USC graduate, and Carolina could be in Alabama again to finish their season. But a lot of things can happen between now and then. No matter what the outcome, the Carolina-Clemson clash on bid day should have a bunch of men in brightly colored jackets with their hands on the phone ready to huddle long-distance with committee chairman and members.
