'Go Fc CO*KG( By RALPH STICE Stefl Writer In a rematch of last year's < title game, Go For Goal ' topped the Strikers 2-0 Thursday to win their second straight co-rec soccer championship. Steve Geller and Mike Herman scored for the winners, who finished the season with a perfect 7-0 record. Geller gave Go For Goal all the scoring they needed with his shot at 8:28 of the L first half. The Strikers : battled desperately to come back, as they had in the semi-finals, but the stringent Go For Goal defense, led by Joe McKenna and Margaret Stribbling, handed tVin Cfril/ or'o thoip firof U1U UV1 mvi 0 aaamv shutout of the year. | The victors delivered the killing blow at 4:45 of the second half, when Herman took a wildly bouncing pass L at midfield and raced ffr unhindered toward the goal before beating goalie Jody Welch. "We just got the bounces that's all. It was a lot closer than 2-0," Go For Goal Bob Allison said. Allison praised his team's defense, and in particular Stribling, for successfully executing the team's strategy of keeping the ball away from the potent Teruaki Nozawa. "I don't know how she does it, but she's always there to make the big defensive play. She .pejNM |p!j^ fc^8 [' i^7.'-1v1-,-- ^ _-_ | 8 I - I tmm ir Goal' ? jvuc saved us lots of times," said Allison of Stribling. Striker coach Bill Davis felt McKenna keyed the winners. "He played good defense. He stopped us. That was out weakness, we couldn't get by him," he said. Go For Goal's concentration on Nowaza almost proved costly as Striker Sonya Smith came plnsft to tvinff the same several times in the late minutes. "I feared their girls scoring. There were several chances where they had good shots," Allison said. "Everybody was putting defense on Teruaki. That was out problem," said Stribling. But, as teammate Aly Khalil said of Nowoza, "unce ne was sioppea, we couldn 't do any thing." "They were much better organized than we were. We had better players, in the sense of skills, but we were not getting together as they were. If we had talked for five to ten minutes before the game we would have won. If we had some plan, we could have won easily," Khalil said. ?* il A 1 1 A. _ .1 _ Jttoui leams nau tu struggle to make it to the finals.
