1 Women's Tennis I .J? kuu| VUIHCVUVH9 By CHUCK WRIGHT SUN Writer According to Coach Jeff Kefalos, the outlook for the Ladj I Gamecocks tennis team this year was one of cautious op timism...that is before the Oct. 3 weekend. After romping through their first two tournaments, the Lady Gamecock* can now lay claim to a top ten ranking ? or better. While Dan Marino and his Pitt Panthers were flying the friendly skies of Carolina all over Williams-Brice Stadiurr two Saturdays ago, the Lady Gamecocks were polishing of Clemson 8-1 to take the title of the Carolina Fall Classic. Foi the weekend, the Lady netters won 20 matches to their op ponents seven, and knocked off highly ranked Indiana in th< semi-finals. "No, I'm not surprised" Kefalos said of the performance "we're just playing good tennis, that's all. It was a goo< f tournament. All the teams were good...we just had p "Tcxm weekend." A good weekend indeed. Along with Indiana, who Kefaloi savs will be in the toD ten. and Clemson. who mioht. the fiel< included North Carolina, Duke, Georgia, Southern Methodis and Louisiana State. Both Duke and North Carolina hav< strong programs that have taken ACC titles in the past, whil< Southern Methodist is one of a number of strong Texai teams. The strong showing in the tournament, combined with th< squad's Oct. 2 win in Middle Tennessee State's tourney, ha: the coach a bit more self-assured when talking about hi teatn than he was at the outset of the season. "We should b ^ in the top ten for sure. I don't know just where yet, but we'l W be in there," he said of the rankings that come out during th< FuffeU I f from page 12 \|r ball because it might not happen," he remarked in his Vj 1 normally quiet voice. \1 rMany players like at- y tention, but Puller is more V worried about being em i| barrassed. Another team that Kefalos feels will be in the top ten is - Indiana, who the Lady Gamecocks defeated 5-4 in the semir finals. "Indiana was our biggest win for sure," remarked t * Kefalos. "I guess Clemson is big because they are Clemson, t \ but Indiana was definitely the biggest." ( While the weekend was full of big wins for the Lady netters, Kefalos was not surprised: "You get the players and you ' know pretty much how well they're going to do. They have all \ played each other before in national tournaments, so we had a good idea." r Throughout the tournament, freshman Laura Berstein held ; down the No.l singles position, defeating Clemson's Jane Foreman 6-2,6-2 in the finals. Clemson's lone win came at , No.2 with Jody Trucks defeating Johnna Chafin 6-4,6-2. At i number 3, Dawn Otto took a 7-5,6-2 win over Jennifer Hirsh, i and in a marathon match at number 4, it was Carolina's Carol Renz over Melissa Seigler 7-6,6-7,7-5.
