University of South Carolina Libraries
Library I By SIMON KEONIG SUM Writer , Standing on the edge of the scenic Horseshoe is a building of tradition, history and knowledge. Its tradition is embedded in the past when it was once the main library of South Carolina College. History fills the pages of all the books, periodicals and documents within the building. Knowledge rests in the hands of the staff that maintains the daily flow of information needed to remain active in providing the University of South Carolina with the history of this state. The South Caroliniana Librarv is mm prised of special collections depicting South Carolina news and issues from the Colonial era to today. The library itself is divided into two main areas. The circulation room, on the second floor, contains books, pamphlets, newspapers and maps. Also, many old and valuable recordings, pictures and records can be found in this area. On the ground floor the manuscript room houses original letters, papers and documents. However, not all materials may be checked out. For example, books located in the closed stacks must be obtained from a librarian and read in the circulation room. This system protects many valuable collections with only one copy at the library. The library has more than 2.2 million manuscripts; 70,000 books and pamphlets; over 17,000 pictures; in excess of 2,200 maps; and more than 10,500 reels of microfilm.
