before, you may swear against ever touching alcohol again.
jMore seriously, you may have a drinking problem that you
don't realize or perhaps that you won't admit. 4
9 College students drink for many reasons. They drink for
fun? to get drunk; to ease tension; to escape from pressures
or loneliness; to be accepted ; or maybe for a lack of anything
better to do.
Because so many social activities at USC involve drinking,
many students, especially freshmen, may feel pressured into
drinking.
Many students believe a few beers or a mixed drink or two
improves Gamecock football games or helps relieve tensions
after a major exam.
However, too often, a few beers lead to a few more, and
drunkenness is the result.
ft A LOW level of alcohol in the hlood arts as a milrt
tranquilizer. The body can safely oxidize the alcohol from
drinking one drink in an hour. A 12-ounce can of beer, an
average four-ounce glace of wine and 11/2 ounces of 80 proof
liquor (one mixed drink) all contain about the same amount
of alcohol and cause about the same physiological responses.
The comment, "I don't have a problem? I only drink
beer," is a common misconception. The effects of drinking
beer are the same as drinking "distilled spirits" because

Alcohol acts as a depressant on the central nervous
system. As a person drinks more, his inhibitions are lessened
^ and he may feel happy and at ease. Conversely, depending on
many factors, the person may feel depressed or defensive.
As drinking continues, muscle coordination and balance
may be temporarily impared. Perceptions are clouded.

depending on a number of factors:
How fast you drink.
What you drink. Diluting alcohol with water slows down the
absorption rate.
How much you weigh. A heavy person can drink more with
less effect than a light person.
How empty your stomach is before drinking. Food also
slows down the absorption rate.

determine the impact alcohol has on you body at a given
time.
HOW MUCH alcohol is safe varies from person to person.
Today about 70 percent of all adults in the United States
drink alcoholic beverages, according to recent statistics.
However, the percentage of college students who drink is
slightly higher. About 10 million Americans are alcoholics,
and college-age people comprise the largest group of "heavy
drinkers."
