' BicycleWatch Deletes Theft R.> METHVD * .< "J mtiU/in U. L.IUI1 1 L<t ^ Staff Wfiler USC's recent bike watch in front of the Russell House was a success according to Danny Baker, deputy director of USC's Department of Law Enforcement and Safety. "We were willing to take the chance of failure or of getting about five people to participate," Baker said. However, he said, that failure never came about, as more than 340 students and faculty members responded to the bike registration program. Baker said the registration program, which has been available at USC for several years, is administered by the Ilpnnrtmont nf Dni<lrin/< r?? - -1?* ' ? ....viiv ui i a living aiiu veuicit; rvegisiranon on Pendleton Street. ^ When a bicycle is registered with the university, the serial number is recorded and filed. The serial number is then engraved on the bike in a place of the owner's choosing. There is no registration fee. ANOTHER identifying mark of the owner's choice may also be engraved on the bicycle. The owner also gets a decal to place on the bike. Rakpr saiH thprp nrp m a n\/ roicnne rodicfnr q ? ~ V, ? VUOVIBU VV A U UII\C with the university. The identifying decal is a preventive measure in itself, he said. A would-be thief sees the sticker and knows the bicycle is registered. The university registration program also informs bike _ owners on how to make the bicycle more secure. P "We found that many people had inadequate locks and chains," Baker said. Booklets on bicycle safety are given to bike owners who register. The booklets explain bicycle safety rules and are also available from thp South Carolina Dpnartmpnt of Highways and Public Transportation. ANOTHER bonus of the program is that when a bicycle is registered and the serial number is recorded, there is a better chance of getting that bike back to the owner should it be stolen, Baker said. Last year, more than 94 bicycles were stolen on campus. ^ Rnkpr antH that cin^O TIQP ic or* ? pKnn namnuc mkink _ VO?V?v WABAVV Wlk/v/ AU uu UA M?ll VCIUIJ/Uil WU1V.I1 encourages biking and walking ? preventive measures are required.
