Tuition Increase Hits Med Students D.. vtr/WMi? nAnnrrrfr "J i?vii?t,rnuut,ii SUM Writer While the majority of USC students had to pay a $50 to $100 tuition increase this fall, medical school students' tuition was raised $215 to $415. Medical school juniors and seniors began classes June 29 and July 6, respectively. Both groups paid their fees by June 29 and received fee receipts for either $790 (in-state) or $1,580 (out-of-state). But medical students were notified in August, several weeks after classes had begun, that a tuition increase would Ko An fn fVinit* inif i o 1 t\atrtY>nnf TKii iip MV mvuvvi vu lu VIIVII HllVlOl puj 11IV.1H. Although they are happy with other aspects of the medical school, the increase is an "aggravating problem" for some medical students. "I don't think it's fair," said a junior. "I've had to compromise with my financial situation. A lot of seniors are older with families and are very limited with their finances. It's especially a narusnip ior siuaenis on loans, me siuaeni added. Some students asked for a postponement of the increase until January but were told it was impossible because of "the amount of paperwork," Donohue said. Another junior said a fee receipt is a legal contract between the students and the university. 44A contract is a contract," the student said. 44We upheld our end of the affrppmpnt nnH nnu; (hpv'ro nnt hnlHincr nr? thoirc TIwjii Wouo VV*??<WIIV 4411V) 14 V* T W41V/JT A V AVT V HViVllllg up HIV/HO. Apparently several students discussed the possibility with USC attorneys but were not told whether they had a good case, USC attorneys were (not available for comment. However, the medical students doubt any formal action will be taken because of the high cost of legal services. "We don't want to cause any waves," one senior said.
