_ FOOTBALL ? USC-PITT Saturday 3:45 W(??3k(gm(0l Williams-Brice Stadium TV: ABC, Channel 25 L_ ^ I Friday, October 2,1981. GAME< gSCFace1 Both Coaches Cil I Jim torDeu Awt. Sports Editor Take two coaches coming off what may have been their most successful seasons ever, that climaxed with a head on clash on national T.V. in the Gator Bowl, and pit them in the rematch 10months later and here's what you get. "I've never seen anything like it," USC Coach Jim Carlen, ...i i i 41 f i,i- iun:_ ????a o A . wiiu icu uie vjraiiiwucivs iu men atxuiiu tuiiscvuuvc o-t 1 ?:ui u and a Gator Bowl trip last year, said of the injuries that have hurt his offense. "I've never had this many injuries before." "What we need is an open date or a team that we're a little bit better than to get some maturity with our offense," Carlen said "They (USC) will be a lot better off than we will," said Pittsburgh Coach Jackie Sherrill, who's 1980 squad went 11-1 including a 37-9 rout of USC and was ranked No.2 in both the AP and UPI polls and first in the N.Y. Times. "We lost a lot of quality football players," Sherrill lamented. "We lost a lot of great players." Sherrill's losses seem heaviest on defense, where Heisman Trophy runner-up Hugh Green was taken in the NFL's draft first round by Tampa Bay and Gator Bowl star Ricky Jackson was plucked in the second round by New Orleans. The Panthers return just two starters on defense. Though the names have changed, the results haven't, as Pitt is the No.l ranked defensive unit in the country, giving up an average of just 151 yards a game. Pitt is also first in rushing defense, giving up only 20 yards on the ground in their first two games. Still Sherrill is pessimistic. "We don't have anv nlavprs likA inn's All-Amorinan candidates Emanuel) Weaver and (Andrew) Provence," Sherrill stated. " Defensive-wise up front they're as good as any team we'll face this year. That includes Penn State." What the Panthers do have coming back is senior linebacker Sal Sunseri, the fourth leading tackier on the squad last year. The 6-0, 220-pounder has been a part-time starter since his sophomore year. Sophomore safety Tom Flynn is the other returning starter. On offense, Pitt will miss fullback Randy McMillan, another first-round draft pick last year, and signal caller I iCarvurcc ^ GUEST PICKER ^ Mike Nemeth i USC Asst. "He's been able to experience a lot of things this year," Sherrill continued, and said he feels Marino has matured "quite a bit." "He's got an awful lot of talent." Marino also has talented wide receivers to throw to, including junior split end Julius Dawkins, who has scored five of Pitt's eight touchdowns this year. Daneerous Dwieht Collins, already touted bv the Panthers as an Ail-American candidate as a sophomore, is doubtful for the game with a hamstring injury. Sherrill said a decision on whether he can play will not be made until game time. If Collins can play, Pitt's offensive firepower should be raised more than a few notches. Pitt has played just two games so far ? a 26-6 win over Illinois and a 38-7 rout of Cinncinati ? so Sherrill is concerned about his team. "There's a lot of things they haven't experienced yet," Sherrill said. "(South Carolina) has been in IhfmA tnncrh sihiatinnc this voar " "In my opinion," Carlen countered, " they've had one i month to get ready for us." Sherrill also feels the effect of last vear's season-ending defeat will not be lost on the Gamecocks. "I'm sure it's still in the back of their minds," he said. "We're a different football team (from last year)," Sherrill added. "I don't know what's gonna happen." ick Pick-em Ppi Johnny Boggs Jim Corbett Mark Pla Sports Staff Asst.
