Writers Com Continued from page 7 ON NOV. 18 and 19, sessions on poetry and the novel as history will be held from 6-8 p.m. with article writing and short story sessions scheduled from 8:15-10:15 p.m. each evening. Participants may choose either poetry or the novel as historv for the first two-hour session and either short story or article writing for ther ?cond. Writers with novels also may set up individual appointments with Greer through Ashley. An article or two proposals may be submitted in the article writing category and two poems may be turned in for ooetrv consultation. Manuscripts are not required to attend the workshop, but"Sandlapper" magazine will present cash awards for the best submissions. The main problem with this comedy about the garment business is its script. Written by the director, Andrew Bergman, the plot abounds with situations as hokey as they are hackneyed. The continuity is clumsy as well. Ryan O'Neal plays a meager college professor who returns home to work in his father's (Jack Warden) failing garment business. The business folds and is bought by Big Eddie (Richard Kiel?remember Jaws in "Moonraker?"), a gigantic ogre who has a good-looking Italian wife (Mariangela Melato). O'Neal saves the business by designing, quite by accident, a unique style of blue jeans? see-through bottoms. THE CENTRAL comic conflict is set off when O'Neal falls in love with Melato. Jack Warden plays O'Neal's c with a zesty vulgarity. A couple of his rib remarks are irresistably tunny. Mariang Melato's performance seems stuck in h gear throughout the entire film. Even Rj O'Neal is more animated than usual. Fi Gwynne is briefly amusing as a droll, d dering scholar. But the zealous cast can't rescue hopeless script. Most of the situations too egregious to be funny. The result s wholly forgettable comedy. 1?
