Several Bates House residents attended the dorm government meeting Sept. 21 because they were concerned that there had apparently been no election during the spring 1981 ? semester to replace dorm government members who were leaving office. "It's nothing against them (the government members) personally, said Richard Stokes, one of the Bates House residents who questioned the validity of the dorm government. "Nobody could remember there being an election last year," Stokes said. "We a looked into the matter and ^ found out there was no election." Election proceedings were begun as usual last semester, according to Josef Mirakovits, ex-president of Bates House. "Two weeks before the election, we put up posters to recruit people who wanted to run for dorm government ^ positions," Mirakovits said. "At that time, there were around 20 names on the signup list. About half those names were fictitious, and many more turned out to be people whose roommates signed their name as a joke." "When election time approached, we had only one candidate who wanted to be ^ elected to each office. Theoretically, you can t lose rAo< % ^ _ r' or G. Although there was no election, Donna McAuley, president; Diana Ades, vicepresident; Scott Fantozzi, cnnrotarv nnrl Hnrman the treasurer, all assumed office in the Bates House government this fall. According to Article IV, n 1: if .fit auction 11 01 lilt; oaitrs nuuac Dorm Constitution, "All Executive Officers shall be elected in the spring term for the following academic year." "We were arrusftri nf hfintf an illegal government," Ades said. They said that since we had no election, we had no right to be in office.''
