' Close Journ Not A By VICK1 SHEAHIN ? Start Writer The advertising/public relations sequence of the College of Journalism may remain closed to transfer students more than a year, according to sequence head William B. Goodrich. "Since we just closed the sequence last June, it is still a bit early for us to tell. We haven't had the impact of it yet. It (reopening) could ) possibly happen next year. It depends on the December graduation and the spring enrollment," Goodrich said. The advertising/public relations sequence publicly closed in July after a letter from Albert T. Scroggins, journalism dean, was sent to all journalism students. s\ccoraing 10 me dean, the sequence was closed to transfers because of "budget ~ difficulties" ? not enough P money to hire more teachers. The result was a smaller enrollment in the advertising/public relations sequence. "By getting down to a minimum level, we can give the students the aualitv of the course they deserve," Scroggins said. Cutting back enrollment benefits both the instructors and the students. ^ The instructors are able to ^ have the graduate assistants needed to handle the 30student classes, and the students get the individual nssictanpo tWl Cummin Mw^.vyvv4?*w niV/jr UUOC1 VC, Scroggins said. I anticipate in 12 months, after 50 to 60 students have graduated, we will accept transfer students," Scroggins said. However, the dean said transfers are now being accepted into the college's "undecided" category for lower division students only if they have fewer than 60 hours transferable credit, or into the the broadcasting sequence and the newseditorial sequence. But there is no guarantee as to when the closing will be lifted. A waiting list is also available for transfers The GAMECOCK b the student newspaper o< the University of South Carotin* and it published four time* a wren on rviunoays, WfOfVMyi, IIWIMbyl and Friday* during the fat] and spring semesters and weeVty on Wednesday* during both summer sessions, with the exception of university holidays and examination periods. "Freshmen need not worry," Scroggins said, because the first two years of journalism deal mostly with the basics: English, math nnd sripnrp "It will K#> another two years before they (freshmen) will think about a major, and by then the sequences will probably be open. It just depends on enrollment and attrition," he said. r hc Home a c? ?J1 1 DEADLI Return < p" / / \r ..
