That distaste may be warranted in some cases. USC students living in university-owned apartments give /aried descriptions of ^ uvmg cuiiumons. Residents of Nada Apartments, Cliff Apartments and University Terrace last week described their environments in words ranging from "wonderful" to "filthy" and reacted positively and negatively to the efforts nf RpciflpnHfll I ift> Qpruipoc At Nada Apartments, located near Gambrell Hall on Henderson Street, roommates Yvonne Padgett and Mary Medders said they are satisfied with their apartment and its upkeep. ? ? ?~ "I lived off campus before I moved here, and I liked it. This is like living off campus in some ways. I like having our own kitchen/' ? Nada resident PADGETT, a junior journalism major who has lived at Nada for more than a year, called it a "super" place to live. ^ "I love it. The place is very nice . . . "everything here is in good condition," she said. "1 lived off campus before I moved nere, ana i liKea 11. mis is nice living on campus in some ways. I like having our own kitchen." Padgett said Residential Life Services answers requests for repairs promptly and that the only problem she has encountered since moving to Nada has been in the area where the washing machines and dryers are. "A lot of the maintenance people use our machines. Sometimes it's very crowded, or those men will whistle at you," she said. 1 Partoptt said hpr nf?iahhor<; arp "vppv nirp i O o J though, and there's always something going i on for the residents, like a Nada keg party." 1 "I THINK this place is wonderful, and now, I wouldn't live anywhere else," Padgett said. I Medders agreed that Nada is a pleasant I place to live. "It's clean, and we really don't have a big problem with roaches or i anything," she said. The senior business ] major moved into Nada with Padgett. She 1 also mentioned the problem with the | washer-dryer area, but said that RLS is usually responsive to the residents' needs. ; The GAMICOCK is the student | newspaper of the University of South Carolina and is published lour times a ^ gt dfa week on Mondays, Weriesdays, Thursdays f and Fridays during the fall and spring semesters and weekly on Wednesdays during both summer session*, with the exception ol university holidays and I SPIVt'Cl Wltl examination periods. Medders owns a car and said an advantage to Nada is that residents can rent a space in a small parking lot next to the annrtmpntc BRUCE Ritchie, a junior journalism major and a newcomer to Nada, called Nada a "peaceful" place to live. "It's pretty quiet around here. A lot of the students who live here are more academically oriented than the average ctnrtant UlbMVtVlIt) I1V OU1U . Ritchie said the resident atmosphere at Nada is probably due in part to the long application and interviewing process potential residents must undergo. He added that although the Nada 1 buildings are old, they remain in good condition, and he credited RLS. [ At Cliff Apartments, located next to Bates | West, the married residents differed in their J feelings about where they live. "I THINK the arrangement they have on r the floors is good," said Mrs. Katherine Kornder, a fourth grade teacher at Sumter P Elementary. "I don't have any children, l onrl nn mti flr\r\v I auu UII iiijf IIUUI U11 umjr mai I 1CU tUUJJlt'S without children. It's a lot quieter," she said. Kornder has lived at Cliff Apartments for one month, but she said she has already seen some positive and some negative aspects of Cliff. "They have some good programs, such as teaching of English language for foreign spouses. I think, though, that they should spray more often for roaches. And the wc*&iiei:> ttiiu uryers are noi always g working," she said. f More frequent and better care of the laundry area seemed to be a complaint with most Cliff residents. One couple, who asked not to be identified, said only some of the washers and dryers are in working order at any one time. "And we do have a bug problem," said the woman. "I think it's because they used to have a different exterminator, but when they changed it went downhill," she said. Marv Ann Cornwall, a nursp said shp is _ unhappy with the state of disrepair in some parts of the building. She also singled out the laundromat, and said there is a "really bad problem with bugs.'' "I don/t think RLS is doing a very good job at all (with maintenance)," she said.
