Book censorship and attacks on values clarification
programs in schools are among the controversial education
issues to be examined at a symposium here Oct. 9-10.
Sponsored by the Graduate Regional Studies Department
of USC's College of Education and the Association for
Humanistic Education and Development, a national
organization jthe symposium is designed for teachers, ad9
ministrators and others concerned about the future of
elementary and secondary education.
Entitled4'The Right to Know, the Right to Teach, the Right
to Parent," the symposium will include sessions on cen
sorship in the classroom, secular numamsm in ine scnoois,
and what humanistic education is and is not.
ACCORDING to Dr. E.H. Robinson of the College of
Education, "Book censorship, attacks on values clarification
programs, labeling as an invasion of privacy and attempts to
eliminate any forms of humanistic education from the
schools are becoming mpre and more widespread and are

having a major impact on counseling ana teacmng practices.
? "The symposium will place emphasis on creating an
awareness of some of the issues involved in the growing
controversy over secular humanism in the schools," he said.

"Participants will be exposed to a variety of topics, in-,
eluding an examination of censorship attempts, the impact of
pressure groups on teaching and counseling practices, the
political climate and its effects on the schools, and the rights
and responsibilities of teachers, counselors and administrators
in the educational process," Robinson said.
Speakers will be Edward Jenkins, author of "Censors in
the Classroom" and director of the English Curriculum

author of "Secular Humanism in the Schools: The Issue
Whose Time Has Come" and "Family, Feminism and the
Therapeutic State;" Howard Kirschenbaum, director of the
National Coalition for Democracy in Education and co
author of "Values Clarification in the Classroom;" Helen K.
Billings, founder and educational director of the Montessori
Institute of America and founder and president of the Helen
K. Billings Educational Foundation; and Dr. Marcia Taylor
of USC's Department of Government and International
Studies.
