Whales' 'R By PATTY McCAHTHY Staff Writer The Killer Whales proved to be alive, nowhere near extinction and absolutely watertight at the Golden Spur Wednesday evening. Originating from Charleston, this three-man dance band produces more quality and sound than many six-man groups. The band members describe their hard-hitting style as ORnrfim urn..A ?> 1 - - J ?* - -- 1 * ' nave. jL/dviu ocuiauy, ieau guiutnsi ana vocansi said, "A rogue wave is a freak wave in the middle of the ocean that sweeps everything in its path." THEIR ANIMATED style roused the capacity crowd to its feet after the band tore in the opening "Marline." The band had no problem keeping up the momentum from there. "Johnny Too Bad," a short bang-up rocker, definitely scored big, as the crowd surged about the dance floor. A standard song in their repertoire is a terrific rendition of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out," which features bass guitarist and back-uo vocalist .lames Rlakpslee Blakeslee commented on the changes in the Killer Whales since last y?ar. Murphy Pitts, the band's drummer, showed his expertise in his performance of the new wave type, "Concrete Jungle," which brought out the punk rockers of the crowd. He agreed that the band is more creative now, saying, "We're having fun, playing well and sounding very good." THE KILLER WHALES play a variety of music though it's mostly rock 'n' roll. Bethany described what he looks for in selecting their music. "Certain songs hit me. A song has to have a really good, infectious rhythm. It needs a random or 4tounge-in-cheek' humor for it to appeal tome," he said. Bethany said he looks for songs that the band can identify with because "otherwise, you end up re-creating someone else's songs ? it has to be capable of being a vehicle for your own feelings." Bethany composed several original songs, such as a great! favnritp "What Vmi finnnn nn?" Thn KonH io ?uuuuis tut i cnujf perfecting two new songs he has written. Bethany is particularly proud of "Emotional Geography," which he says 44has got a good bop to it." It's expected to be ready next week. Released under the Moonlight Records label, it is an EP (extended play), four-cut album ? smaller ^ than a standard LP. Bethany, Blakeslee, and Pitts are all enthusiastic about its success. Other favorites Wednesday night included "Long Distance Romancer," the Talking Heads' "This Ain't No Party," "Heard It Through the Grapevine," and "Welcome to the Working Week," and "Too Much Fun."
