"I'd like to develop a ball control-type passing game," Shipp continued. "I'd like to keep the (Carolina) defense off the field. "I think the kids have performed real well, he said. "I've been totally amazed at how well they've picked it up." The quarterbacks have performed particularly well in practice and have drawn high praise from Shipp. "They've simply amazed me on the practice field," Shipp related "I'm really impressed with our kids." THE CAROLINA coaches did their homework during the off-season, with the offensive coaches visiting with the San Diego Chargers to absorb the intricacies of an aerial attack. The addition of Shipp to the coaching staff gives USC one of the premier passing minds in football. Shipp has served as an assistant coach at Florida State, Miami (Fla.), Tulsa, and most recently Texas, as a quarterback or receiver coach. The 52-year-old Middle Tennessee State graduate "started out," as he puts it, Jim Hart with the St. Louis Cardinals and Archie Manning of the New Orleans Saints at the beginning of their long and still successful careers.
