Carle By TRACY HELMS Sport* Editor m w "I feel good about this team," USC Head Football Coach Jim Carlen says of the 1981 edition of Gamecock football, but he quickly adds, "I hope people aren't expecting too much." "I don't think it's a good question, but I'll answer again anyway: we win iniss George Rogers," he says of the Heisman Trophy winner and all-time leading USC ground-gainer. BUT OTHER important positions must also be filled. NFL first-round draftee ( Willie Scott's size and strength in the tight end slot won't be easily replaced. And the Gamecock offensive line must rebuild from graduation losses and from injuries suiterea oy center Mark Austin and tackle Jeff Edwards during recent scrimmage sessions. And to compound Carlen's offensive woes, he must find ^ a fresh quarterback for the w first time in three seasons, due to the graduation of Garry Harper. "I've never lost as many quality players in my coaching years," Carlen admitted. "I feel like we have a lot of good, young players. We should have more speed in some positions like wide receiver 0 and defensive back. "We will probably need help from at least one freshman at wide receiver," said Carlen, who has a 10163-6 lifetime coaching record. "(Freshman Ira) Hillary looks like he has good talent and has an ex cellent opportunity to start |H at wide receiver. Jerry Aubin's shoulder hurts him when he throws the ball, so we're moving him from quarterback to wide receiver." However, if one back has a good game,he will get more play." BERRY, ACCORDING to Carlen, is "a very durable runner with tremendous body lean. He is probably the best goal-hunter we have." Carlen also had high accolades for freshman tight end Chris Coney: I feel Corley is a little better than Willie Scott was as a freshman." The defense, which returns seven starters and will no doubt be the team's tough point, is much less worrisome for Carlen. "The defensive ends will be the strongest since we have been here," Carlen said, giving the secondary an equal compliment. "I feel like our defensive front will be better than last year, but we will miss Chuck Allen. "I THINK (junior tackle) Andrew Provence is I SUB STBT I EAT IN OF TAKE 0U1 s 1. Ham & Chee 2.
