Holdermon Ti From the time Ohio State University officials asked USC President James Holderman to visit their campus this summer, Ohio and South Carolina news sources had him pegged as the leading candidate in OSU's search for a new president. Holderman, who eventually turned down OSU's offer, won't confirm or deny that he was number one on OSU's list. But he admits to having had "very serious discussions" with OSU trustees. "Some time ago they (OSU officials) c led me and asked me would I be interested in being cor idered (as a candidate), and I told them no, 1 wouldn't. So, after agreeing to talk to the search committee, Holderman and his family were f flown to Ohio. "Then it got pretty serious," Holderman said, "but still, 1 wasn't looking for a job. Holderman withdrew his name from consideration June 1, and OSU's attempts to woo him out of Carolina country and into Buckeye territory had failed. "One of the phrases the Ohio State people used over and over again was 'let's awaken the sleeping giant and bring it to I'fe,' " Holderman said. The OSU "giant" sleeps on 3,500 acres, has about 35,000 students and an annual budget of more than $500 million. Holderman said USC trustees used the same Dhrase at one time, so it seems logical for OSU to have named Holderman a candidate for the job of waking a giant ? he did it here. The 45-year-old Holderman has brought Carolina international fame by aiding in the creation of the James F. Byrnes International Center and by bringing several foreign dignitaries to USC for the Byrnes Center opening this year. Among those dignitaries was Jihan el Sadat, wife of Egyptian President Anwar el Sadat. continued on next page... , ,? ?
