The area, which is currently the site of "Cloud Nine," USC's indoor soccer field, first was used by the university as an intramural soccer field. USC President James Holderman said he doesn't understand why the group waited five years to file suit. He also said the university was not responsible for the residents' evictions, rather the Reasearch and Development Foun?/*?* ?? *??? Iuauuii was. Stuart Andrews of Palmetto Legal Services said he had been involved with the case for a year, and during that time, the residents had been negotiating with the university. He ^aid the residents finally filed suit Aug. 24, after the unI^viersity had continuously denied liability. Andrews said the Research and Development Foundation was chartered in 1965 to buy and hold property for state agencies. He said the Foundation was used chiefly by the university and that all the foundations officers were university employees living in university housing. THE SUIT included two other major issues, according to Andrews. "All of the residents were forced to move into substandard housing," Andrews said. "All are still living in substandard housing." The residents claim that the Relocation Assistance Act requires the university to provide up to $4,000 in benefits to assist displaced residents in their moves to adequate housing.
