The class of '81 brought home more honors and trophies to USC sports than any year in its history, and there may never be another year like it ? ever. USC achieved an NCAA first when Gamecock athletes took the Division I rushing crown in football and the scoring title, in basketball, a feat never accomplished by players from the same school in an academic year. There were several other firsts in Carolina snnrts that mou ?rvt ?? 4 ? -f~- ? j mvi uv moiviicu 1UI JTCOl a IU come, so let's take a quick look at what made 1980-61 such a special year. George Roger not only led the nation in rushing (moving up from the second slot in 1979) but he captured the coveted Heisman Trophy, the symbol of the year's best college football player, as well. The Gamecock baseball squad overcame an uncharacteristically slow start and sweated out an NCAA tournament bid before taking the Regional championship in Columbia and advancing to the semi-finals of the College World Series, finishing fourth in the nation with an impressive 46-15 slate. Gamecock coaches can easily point to the vast improvements on past performances to be made this coming year and have a valid point. Coach Foster's hoopsters, who stunned the major college basketball world with a 17-10 slate and an upset win over Marquette despite having the nation's youngest team, return the nucleus of last year's squad along with five highly-sought recruits. But Carolina will be without the invaluable leadership supplied by senior guards Fredrick and playmaker Kevin Dunleavy. Gamecock grid mentor Jim Carlen has a strong defense to center his season around as Carolina seeks a third-straight eight-win season. But without two-time Ail-American tailback Rogers and seven other offensive starters, Carlen and his coaches have had to change their offensive attack and take advantage of a number of good backs returning, plus add a few offensive wrinkles to offset the loss of dependable George. Junior college transfers and incoming freshmen plus the development of current Gamecocks could take most of the sting out of these losses. THE SOCCER SQUAD and women's basketball squad should rebound from their relatively 'off years and combine with the growth of other USC sports to bring greater athletic glory to the university sports program.
