'Raide Old-Ti "Raiders of the Lost Ark,'the first George Lucas- Steven Spielberg collaboration, and "Dragonslayer," the latest film by the creative team of Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins, are perfect summer entertainments. Both movies are charming, exciting and altogether involving. In addition, both are extraordinarily wellmade, with state-of-the-art special effects (by Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic) that reinforce the ideas and actions inherent to their delightfully off-beat, but audiencepleasing, screenplays. "Raiders," produced by Lucas and directed by Spielberg, is the first installment of a proposed trilogy of films duuui uiuiuuiid suited vnctiiiauu ruiu;, <t heroic archeologist who dabbles in stolen artifacts when he isn't lecturing at a prominent New England university. He is chased by a horde of poisoned dartblowing natives, manaced by a pack of machine gun-wielding Nazis, punched-out by his hard-drinking girlfriend (Karen Allen), betrayed by a pet monkey, locked in an Egyptian tomb (where he's surrounded by slithering snakes), nearly burned alive, and nearly decapitated by an airplane propeller. The viewer never doubts that Jones will win the end, but at the same time he's always worried that he just might not be right. LIKEWISE, the viewer knows there's a dragon to be slain in "Dragonslayer," produced by Barwood, directed by Robbins and written by both. But just who's going to do the slaying and in what manner is suiuemirig me viewer is never sure of until he sees it happen. Peter MacNichol is Galen, the sorcerer's apprentice, who falls in love with Valerian atid who wants to slay the dragon in order to protect her, once her transvestism is revealed. "Dragonslayer" plays much better than it sounds and the acting is impressive, especially that of Richardson. But it's the dragon who is unquestionably the star of the show. The beast of the title is no ordinary fire Dreaming lizard, it swims, flies, devours virgins, burns entire cities and even mourns the deaths of its young.
