t -"* Affe By DAVID BAKER One of my biggest complaints against the more recent collections of holiday movies has been the abundance of pictures aimed solely at redneck audiences. Last year brought us such low-brow garbage as "Smokey and the Bandit 11" and "Any Which Way You Can." In the past month we've been exposed to even more excreble fare such as "The Cannonball Run" and "The Night the Lights Went Oui In Georgia." Like "Georgia," the latest addition to this particularly irritating sub-genre of films is based on a hit Countrv anH Western song. Directed by Gus Trikonis, the picture is called "Take This Job and Shove It." As much as I hate to admit it, the movie merits being seen. It simply doesn't have a malicious bone in its body. The film seems to lumber right off the screen, big and friendly, wanting to shake your hand, pat your back and take you into all its confidences. It likes you so much that you'd feel like a heel if you didn't return some of its affection. A rather sneaky way to become a hit, but it works. As the picture opens, Frank is told that he must leave Minneapolis and go back to his home town of Dubuque, Iowa. His job, once there, is to take charge of the local brewery and make quantity, not quality, the primary objective of the production line. After accomplishing this aim, however, Frank discovers that both he and the brewery workers have been used, that the only reason the corporation wanted production raised was so that it could resell the brewery to a Texas millionare whose methods of operation are even more unscrupulous than its own. With the aid of his buddies from high school (Tim rP V\ irv* A M ? ~ ? 1 i iiuuici sun ana David Keith), and his former 1 girlfriend (Barbara Hershey), Frank devises a plan that will both save his 1 worker's livelihoods and I ruin the corporation's plans for the brewery. To be sure, the heart of "Take This Job and Shove It" beats to the rhythm of that old "Wizard of Oz" cliche. BUT, AT the same time, the movie isn't afraid to show how really hard it is for the homefolk to make financial ends meet. The homes of Frank's buddies are quite squalid and what social life they have isn't all enviable, either. A night on the town for the workers consists of shooting pool, drinking beer and grousing about their jobs and other dissatisfactions. Several scenes, most of them very humorous, also demonstrate the contempt these people hold for those in positions of power. One such scene, very early in the picture, has Frank speeding into Dubuque in his v-ajujj-dppie-i eu Mercaaes convertible. Once inside the city limits, he finds himself behind a beaten-up old cadillac, which refuses to let him pass. This, of course, makes Frank all the more Hptprmi noH n <tn? ? ALSO NOTEWORTHY is the uniformly fine acting by the supportting cast, including Martin Mull, as a deliciously evil corporate hatchet man, and Art Carney, as the crustv former poesident of the brewery. Hays solidifies his standing as one of Hollywood's most likeable young actors, and, in a switch from his straight-man role in "Airplane," he proves that he can be funny while delivering snappy dialogue. "Take This Job and Shove It" is not in the same class with "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Superman II" or "S.O.B.," but it's fun while it lasts.
