Sorbet 'Conn f By DAVID BAKER < : 1 Hal Needham's latest crash'em-up, 'The Can- I nonball Iiun," is quite i possibly the most stupidly < conceived movie of the Dast < 20 years. The story of an illegal, no-holds-barred, 1 coast-to-coast automobile ? race was filmed before--and 1 better--just five years ago j sunder the title "The Gumball I * Rally." ( Anvonp who saw "Th#? i Gumball Rally" is bound to s be disappointed by "The < Cannonball Run." whereas | the former relied on equal itparts of humor, stuntwork I and plain old-fashioned good 1 storytelling to ensure its | viewers of a good time, the latter rel.es wholly on the ^ allure of its all-star cast, % which is headed bv Burt j ^Kevnolds. Roger Moore. J i'';iri'ah Fawcett and Dom 4 DeLuise in Needhain's most recent directorial effort. Miiokey and the bandit II," no sense of chase ever is f|i generated in "The Cannonball Run." We're con- j tinually exposed to a dozen | ui su last ears, among mem two Ferraris and a Lamborghini. Sometimes we see Qjhem going fast. But more often than not, we see them stopped, so that their drivers and passengers can engage in a sort of pseudo-witty redneck repartee, almost none of which is remotely . funny to anyone except, of r~~ If auTot r onbal :ourse, the vast majority of wlno^lrc THE SOLE exception to :his rule is Moore, who maintains his natural air of iignity throughout the otherwise hot-damn-I'm-glad to-be-a-hick-proceedings. When a surly truck driver attempts to talk with Moore yia CB-radio, using all the jargon inherent to such transmissions, Moore demands that the yokel repeat his message, speaking slower and using tmly the Queen's English.
