- , II Sports briefs Track meet JUl today By Jim Corbeft Staff WrH?r The Intramural Track Meet will be held today at the Weems-Baskin Track behind the Roost. Starting time is slated for 3:30 p.m. and participants should | arrive at 3:15 p.m. to warm up. Over 250 students are expected to compete in seven track and three field events. Among the events scheduled are the mile run, ] 100-meter dash, 400-meter ? relay and the mile relay. THE INTRAMURAL [I LeDartment has cancelled [1 I plans for a Melon Run this Saturday. The run was I cancelled "due to a lack of publicity" according to Intramural Graduate Assistant P.J. Nadeau. There were only six entrants for the race, which was to be patterned after the Pumpkin Run held each fall. fldcrr n a a ? r ino i Jim Curl leads the Gamecock ? baseball team in three offensive departments after 38 games. The senior cocaptain from Albany, Ga.. has a club-high 10 home runs, 48 RBI and 53 runs scored. The 1980 first team Academic All-American led Carolina in homers and RBI last year and was second on the squad in runs scored. Catcher Rob Lowery continues to lead the club in hitting with a .408 average. The senior from Tampa, Fla., also has a team-high 15 doubles to go along with his seven home runs and 41 RBI. Right fielder Paul Hollins is second on the squad in batting, hitting at .398. The four year starter has 43 RBI, / seven home runs and 14 doubles. Hollins holds the school record for doubles with 40. Co-captain Rod Carrway leads the team with 57 hits to go along with his .377 batting average. The senior third Iuaaciuuu ims six nome runs, 33 RBI and 13 doubles. Jamey Thaw is hitting .341 on the season. The sophomore second baseman f has 12 doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI. Chris Boyle has already set a Carolina team record for most home runs and RBI by a freshman. Boyle has six home runs and 37 RBI and is batting .274. I Southpaw Dennis Lubert J leads the team in wins with H seven victories against one j defeat. Lubert has pitched * six complete games and 71 ^ innings to lead the team, and has a 2.92 ERA. I senior right-hander Bret Baynham has a perfect 6-0 slate*and a 2.82 ERA, while junior right hander Don Gordon has a team leading 2.45 ERA and a 5-1 record \ including three shutouts and ? four complete games.
