Robin Flower at UKU W Cafe "I relate to traditional and Bluegrans music because it's beautiful, straightforward and life-affirming," says Robin Flower, the talented singer and guitarist who will be appearing on April 20 at Columbia's GROW Cafe. Flower, who will be appearing with Nancy Vogl and Barbara Higbie, says that old time music embodies what feminism is all about. "It has to do with struggling and ~ sharing, with everyone getting a turn. There's no elitism." Flower was born in Cleveland, Ohio and began playing guitar when she was 14. She has since blossomed into a versatile instrument whose talents extend from folk and bluegrass into jazz. SHE HAS PERFORMED her bluegrass music with such groups as The Clinch Mountain Backsteppers, Witchazel, Hazel and Alice, and Carol Ann Wheeler. Flower has also played electric lead guitar with the Latin rock band Be Be K'Roche and jazz with Baba Yaga. Her lead work on mandolin, fiddle, and guitar has been featured on albums by Willie Tyson and Woody Simmons, among others. "More Than FYiends." Flower's album, reflects h?r composing and guitar talents along with her exquisite sense ~ of melody. The album is full of hummable, happy tunes, several of which incorporate jazz. Most of the songs are about women and working class people, the type of people Robin grew up with and was influenced by. FLOWER'S APPEARANCE at the GROW Cafe, 18 Bluff Road, Columbia, should be a delight. Appearing with her will be Nancy Vogl, the singer-guitarist who influenced Flower and played on "More Than Friends."
