"Doctorate students are generally performers," Moody said. "Obviously it would profit the state greatly to keep that talent here." A DOCTORAL degree program has been in demand for many years for several reasons, Moody said. Many faculty members would like to do doctoral work, he said, and many public school teachers need a doctoral degree for advancement in their jobs. Also, many students from around the country would like to study with particular USC professors, he said. "An important impact of a new degree program would be the example the doctorate students set for the undergraduates," Moody said. "The music department is so heavily into performance, and the recitals give in spiration to the younger students. "Probably more than in most departments, the graduate students serve as a role model for the undergraduates," he said.
