Arrest c 'shocks By David DeWttt 8taffWrH*r Some USC students who tutored at the Wilkinson Girls Home a private orphanage in Cayee, were "shocked" at news of the arrest of Wilkinson's director Feb. 23. The tutoring program, which is sponsored by USC's Episcopal-Lutheran- Methodist Center, has been postponed indefinitely since the arrest of Wilkinson director Clara Roberts. State Law Enforcement agents charged Roberts with failing to report suspected child abuse cases and with interfering with a criminal investigation, according to QT cnnlfflctvion ur.,rtU k/uuA/ opunvoiliail HUgll Munn. "This doesn't seem real," said sophomore Richard Culler, chairman of the tutoring program. AcProfess from page 1 evening. After class she and a group of students went out to eat. Munn said the investigation is still "such an active case we can't go into where and why" the child abuse occurred. Roberts was released from Lexington County Jail later on the day of her arrest. The Wilkinson Girls Home was established in 1909 as a home for black girls who had been deserted by their families. iered Heimberger had recently published a book on teaching gifted and talented children and was helping redesign curriculum in BatesburgLeesville area schools. By Forrest Brown 8taff Wrh?r Barnwell College, once gutted by fire but now completely renovated, was rededicated Friday in special ceremonies held by university officials. "Moving back into the building is an improvement to our environment," said Dave Clement, psychology department chairman, during the ceremonies. "The exterior of the building is very impressive," Clement said, quipping that he felt like "Rocky" after climbing the steps CHESTER BAIN, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, said, "A marvelous restoration has taken place. I think it's a wonderful opportunity to further careers in teaching and learning." USC President James B Holderman said, "I'm pleased to end up this eventful week with the dedication of the building of one of the finest departments at the university. GEORGE CURRY. He then set the ceremonial ribbon on fire. According to Clement, the Barnwell structure originally housed the science department and was called LeConte College. However, when the science department moved, it took the name LeConte with it. In 1932, the psychology department moved in, and the building was named for Robert W. Barnwell Sr., former President of South Carolina College and a popular politician who helped get funding for the college. A fire gutted Barnwell College on Jan. 20, 1978. At a cost of $2.5 million, the entire building has been renovated. Several architectural improvements have been made, including restructuring the floor plans to provide for five stories instead of the original four. \ ) H K 11 H =*4 =H= nave i >-10-11 . - 4:30 p.m. J itatives From arved J tour :ens t i ?Bookstore ' House Sf | in Education | "iM 11 ? ** ** ?
