II---* 1 Says Red Cross offu '' | Giving pla may be he ;k ' By Megan Sexton 8tcff Wrttvr Donating plasma twice a week as allowed ' I by local commercial plasma centers is "not good for one's health," according to the medical director of the Central S.C. American Red Cross. Dr. Todd A. Kolb of the Red Cross said federal standards allow a donor to give 50 liters of plasma a year. The Red Cross and the World Health Organization permit a donor to give only 15 liters each year. I USC students account for 60 to 75 percent : of the donors at two of Columbia's commercial blood banks and plasma centers. } Kolb said he doesn't object to commercial blood centers, "but they create an at muapiicre uiai connects money witn blood, and that's not Wealthy for us as a community." THE HIGHLAND Donor Center on Gervais Street pays $10 for a plasma donation and a $5 finders fee to donors bringing new customers to " iter, according to Joyce Andrews, ... -^er. The center also gives $5 bonuses to donors who give five times within three weeks. Blood is removed from a donor and separated into whole blood a plasma, which is 98 percent salt water. The red blood cells are put back into the body, Andrews said. Andrews said recent advertisements in the Gamannrb hnvo holruwl ? - .? ? v IIVI^U UIV VCIIICI J> business. Kolb said these ads encourage excessive donation. "WE DON'T need four or five plasma centers in Columbia. It's an abuse of the donor population, and the primary concern should be the health of the donor," Kolb said. But a large number of donor centers and blood banks in cities like Columbia is not uncommon, Kolb said. ''College and university towns foster commercial blood collecting," he said. Plasma centers and blood banks are licensed and regulated by the federal government. Kolb said the centers "had to be meeting the standards or their doors ( Aeo J**Z_hair f jSnrinn < Spec j Save $ 1 on c save 910G ( Professionally our staff use Rof I Hair and Skin< ? - ? -w? PEGGY JENRETTE, manager of the John Elliott Blood Bank on Assembly Street, said efforts are made to safeguard against abuses by donors. Donors' arms arechecked for needle marks, other area blood banks are called to check on donors and the donors' hemoglobin levels are checked, she nfliH The Elliott Bank deals only with whole blood, which donors are allowed to give once every eight weeks. The bank pays $10 for each donation. Jenrette said 75 percent of the Elliott Bank donors are USC students. THE RED Cross will probably collect more blood from USC students since the number of Red Cross workers at the university has been increased, Kolb said. The Red Cross is trying to make students more aware of the need for blood, he said. The large number of commerrini hinrui banks and plasma centers in Columbia do not take away potential Red Cross donors, Kolb said. "We're not competing for donors," he said. "Volunteer and commercial donors come from two different elements of the population." KOLB SAID blood collected at commercial centers has a higher hepatitis rate than blood from Red Cross donors. i ne Ked Cross is Columbia hospitals' only source of blood and supplies blood for 22 hospitals in the Midlands. Blood collected at the Elliott Bank is used in hospitals in Dade County, Fla. The blood bank is paid $35 for each unit of blood sent to Florida ? $10 for the donor fee and $25 to cover the cost of doini? fp?tc nnH cotnn<t Q Ml?\4 UWVIll^ UIU I blood, Jenrette said. Plasma from the Highland Donor Center is sent to a fractionation plant in California where it is used to make drugs to treat hemophilia and other diseases, Andrews said. . r , nian ] sty 11 ng? alsm^2 | ill hairstyles | >n all perms III / ahead in hair III s the finest in I Fter i~% 1 i i ^are rrociucts 11 able by Johnny Smith I ] ; fAeontoiiO 11 ?nan styling?r] j:| across from Burger Kinq) Mf B ntmc*nt,ordrop by anyti|| web feb. as IThe COUNSELING and HUMAN DEVEL< announce the following workshop and/< students.
