Valentine i By Clarence Breaback Saturday is Valentine's Day and USC sweethearts, as in the past, will shower theii loved ones with cards, candy and flowers. This lovers' holiday is at least 2,000 years old. The ancient Romans associated it with the mating season of the birds, believing birds selected their mates on this day. Traditions of this holiday, as we now knov it. coincided with the Roman festivals o Lupercalia and Juno Februata. Youn( ladies put their names in a hat. The younj man who drew the lucky lady's name wa: her date for the festival or her "protector' for the year, as the case may be. HOW THE festival got its present name i! speculated. One theory has it that it come: from the Norman word "galantin,' meaning "lover of women." The Normal "g" was pronounced as a "v", whicl plausibly could cause confusion among those unfamiliar with the language. Actually, : there were three Valentines, all martyred in A 1 41- * * - ? me inira century A.D. Like several other pagan festivals, the | early Christian church "proselytized" it and f made it a "Holy Day." Instead of pulling ' young ladies' names from a hat, young men drew names of saints and emulated the v virtues of their "saint" for a year. But alas, f the saints just didn't have the charms of the g young ladies. It wasn't easy finding your true love. One ? early custom was for young ladies to pin five bay leaves on their pillow (four on the corners and one in the center) and sleep on g it the eve before Valentine's Day. > ANOTHER BELIEF was that a young 1 lady could discover her true love at the first 1 sight ot a man on Valentine's Day. She , would avert the sight of other men and remain in seclusion until her special man > appeared to call on her. ds Records j ie Special S I iwr Purchase Offer expires 2/20/81 bhhkhbhhmhhhbhhehmbhbhbqhhhhhbhhhhbshhi 4LE 2th-21st substantial Savings On ting Goods!
