But as far as gunning for the NCAA postseason tournament, the Gamecocks can forget the fall and begin with a clean slate. Under NCAA rules. only the spring season determines advancement to post-season play. "Far and away, the highlight of our men's fall season was Steve Liebler winning the individual championship at the Andy Bean-Grenelefe Intercollegiate Tournament," cited Foster. The season will no doubt hinge on Liebler's performance. A native of Portsmouth, Va., Liebler was named to the NCAA Coaches All-America team in 1980. "Steve appears to be ready to repeat his AilAmerican performance of last year," Foster observed, "I feel he is one of the top ten candidates in the country for the Haskins Award, which goes to the outstanding college player of the year." FOSTER ALSO forsees more gems in Liebler's future: "He should have a real good future, including a bonafide chance to do something big on the tour," he said. Liebler leads the linksters in experience, but the senior co-captain is supported by a pack full of potential. " This is the first time we've had this kind of depth," Foster said. Joey Graham, a junior from Columbia, is the squad's other co-captain. Other scheduled starters are sophomores George MacDonald and David Tolley. MacDonald, who hails from Virginia Beach, Va., tied with this year's assistant coach Dirk Maust for 1979-80's second lowest scoring average. Tolley is a transfer from the University of Houston. The team's fifth sDot is still up for grabs. Chris Com, Brian Crisp, Webb Heintzelman, Greg McBride and Rick Sepp will contend for the slot.
