'Jazz Si By Danny Powell Staff Writer Even though the movie "The Jazz Sineer" cot a hart rap from the resident film critic, the movie's soundtrack can not make the same claim. As movies come and go, "The Jazz Singer" may not meet the golden standard, but as a soundtrack, it has no comparison in recent years. Neil Diamond's middle-ofthe-road voice and appeal found its mark several times on the soundtrack. The l !4.. - r ^ ~ (jupuiamy ui ~ L?ove un rne Rocks" and "Hello Again" as single hits are only a sample of the potential Top 40 success stories which may emerge from "The Jazz Singer." What makes this soundtrack different from most is that it includes a lot of the music you would not expect to hear again once you left the theater. This includes the songs Diamond's character is trying to escape from ? Jewish religious tunes sung in Hebrew. "Adon Olom" and "Kol Nidre" may never make the Top 40, but they add a refreshing atmosphere to the album. In a time when flag-waving and patriotism are respectable again, "America" could very well make the top of the charts. The only thing that is really lacking from the album is some of the dialogue that occurs before, during and after a few of the songs. For example, the comments made by the British rock star after he hears Diamond's version of "Love On The Rocks" may have been interesting if it were included on the album. ANOTHER FEATURE of the album is that the iyrics is done, except for the occasional cheering of the audience, is after "You Baby," where Diamond dons brown shoe polish to perform in a Black night club with his friends. However, when the emotion of the songs takes over and Neil begins to clap along, it is noticed that his hands are not those of a "brother." The fight that follows is briefly captured for the album. There are two songs on the album which are really destined to become chart hits. "Summerlove" and v Little I i I iff I a I in. au yci j wen iu me piui Ui the movie, for the most part. This was probably planned, and the writers and producers are secure in the fact that they know it. Sometimes, the lyrics to a few songs will have meaning to the plot of a soundtrack, but with the possible exception of "You Baby," all of the Diamond tracks fit in. As a whole, the album is very well planned and very well arranged. For soundtrack collectors it is a must. Neil Diamond fans should not hesitate to pick it up, also. And for anyone who just enjoys good music, the soundtrack to "The Jazz Singer" will be a needed purchase. When awards go out for this year's movies and music, "The Jazz Singer" soundtrack will be sure to grab up more than its fair share. There have not been any really good soundtracks of the quality of this one to come out in recent years, and it is doubtful there will be for years to come. If nothing's "One of the best film ?
