And just as 442001M has never been surpassed by any film of its I genre, I feel safe in predicting that "Altered States" will be remembered as the classic of its kind. The most amazing facet of this decidedly amazing movie is that it manages to strike a perfect balance between the visual bravura of its director, Ken Russell, and the verbal bombast of its writer, Paddy Chayefsky, I lyii I Blaire Brown lost j Chica By Lynn Massey Assistant Entnrtainmont Ed I Classic chamber music wa the Chicago Symphony Playei afternoon in the Township All part of the USC Cultural se appreciative crowd was ent compositions by Beethoven, H Mollis Snnhr iue p;ay( centrated on other works fr< Piston. It should be mentioned, however, that before abondoning the project, Chavefsky made legally sure that Russell could not tamper with his dialogue. Not one to be told what and what not to do, Russell countered by having the actors deliver their lines so fast that the excess verbiage tends to lose meaning after a while. The story told in "Altered States" is that of Edward Jessup, a Harvard whiz kid and hip Dr. Jekyll who, after experimenting with sensory deprivation chambers and mind-expanding drugs, succeeds in turning himself into a four-feet high Mr. Hyde ? a ramapithecus, the earliest known ancestor of W |R^ 11111 km ?mamm mmI J1 Itered States." nphoi hmic action and a waltz-like ail in the fast and slow and ends with the 6th n Andante con moto alia >, which features a "march nission, the chamber olavprc . ?j ^ ay a work by Paul Hindemith itten strictly for the woodwind composition, Kleine Kamius 24, No. 2, has a playful, characteristic of the comworks. BUT RUSSELL'S direction would be nothing without a talented cast and William Hurt and Blair Brown, both relative newcomers with extensive stage backgrounds, are two shades beyond remarkable as Edward and Emily. Hurt mesmerizingly renders a finely-wrought portrait of a man obsessed with obsession. As his piercing blue eyes register the precise thoughts racing through Jessup's contorted mind, we experience his excitement, his passion and, ummaieiy, nis lerror in me discovery that took him almost a decade to reach. Hurt's is a towering performance and it gives us every indication that he'll be an exceedingly hot property in Hollywood for many years to come. THE CHEMISTRY between Brown and Hurt is undeniably strong and the love scenes they share are among the most erotic ever filmed. With such a taut thread rnnninp hot'veen the two leads, it's surprisingly easy to accept Chavefsky's thesis that love is the final truth, a thesis the author seems to be trying to disprove throughout most of the movie's 102 minutes. "Altered States" truly can be called a masterpiece and that's a term I've not used since my review of Woody's Allen's "Manhattan" two years ago. Normally, I would urge everyone to rush to see a movie as exceptional as this, but here I think such a statement would be ridiculous. There's no need to rush to where this movie is playing, for it's going to be playing there a long, long time. I WOULDN'T raise an eyebrow if, on July 4, we could go straight from an outdoor fireworks display to an inside showing of the fireworks display Russell, Chavefsky, Hurt and Brown have combined to create in "Altered States." tense ^ * LJB&'tjm n jg ers performed chamber >pportunity to see a concert group of musicians who are 'ith such "artistic intensity sing from those groups that nusic exclusively."
