Former hostage William
Belk was welcomed home
Wednesday by more than
15,000 people waving
American flags and yellow
ribbons along the Knox
Abbott Drive motorcade
route.
The West Co'umbia
resident was reunited with
about 100 family members in
a private reception
before leaving in a 20-car
motorcade for a press
conference at Carolina
Coliseum.
People lining the motorcade
route held signs
proclaiming "Welcome
Home William," and "We

45 days.
"Faith in my wife and
family, and faith in my
country helped me get
through the ordeal. The
Iranians tried to brainwash
us. Every day they told us
how bad our government and
our religions were," Belk
said.
WHEN ASKED whether
he learned about Islamic
culture while in captivity,
Belk said that if being locked
in a small room with
white walls was culture, he
received an "abundance" of
it.
"I wrote 'I love Angela' (his
wife) all over the walls," he
said.
Belk was a U.S. State

when the Embassy in
