'Hog Wild, "Di suffer from tea By David Baker FHm Critic "Hog Wild," directed by Les Rose from a screenplay by Andrew Peter Marin, is a trifling little comedy that isn't offensive enough to inspire a sustained tirade. Thus, I shall dispense with it rather quickly. The title of the film does not refer to anything porcine, but to the souped-up motorcycles which 10 or so members of the cast ride through the bigger part of the movie. These folks make up the group known as the bad guys, while an innocuous group of Wisconsin high schoolers make up the group known as the good guys. As usual in films of this ilk, the bad guys rough up the good guys, causing me good guys to attempt revenge. In the end, both groups are happy that the fighting is over and the viewers ? those who stayed ? are happy that the movie is likewise. THE SOLE saving grace of the picture is a rubber-faced actor named Tony Hosato. As the ignoble leader of the motorcycle gang, Hosato looks like a younger, less pudgy, John Belushi. He deliberately mumbles his every line, there's always a compatriot by his side to act as an interpreter, and the bizarre sounds emanating from his koalalike mug are more than enough to sustain the humor in a n I X 6 ^ ?V ^ i v pooococooosoooooooooccoooooooocooooecooo' I - H DRY AT" I | Colonial Cup S i | Five Thriving Races: I- The $50,000Cc - R.G. Patti D'Arbanville, who was Ryan O'Neal's nose-honking girlfriend in "The Main Event," and Michael Biehn, who'll soon be seen opposite Lauren Bacall in the screen version of Bob Randall's best-selling "The Fan," are the only other cast members to make much of an impression, possibly because they're the only pros in the bunch. "Hog Wild" is amateurishly photographed, choppily edited, and the sound quality is horrendous. These same technical problems, surprisingly enough, plague Michael Ritchie's "Divide Madness," Bette Midler's "time-capsule version" of her hit Broadway review. FORTUNATELY, Midler's kinky personality provides spark enough to make this one worth the trip to the theater. She runs through sketches featuring several of her most famous characters, from Sophie Tucker to the particularly hilarious Delores DeLago, and intersperses the jokes with generally well-rendered versions of her most memorable songs. To those who've seen Midler in concert, and to those who caught her recent special for Home Box Office, much of "Divine Madness" will be old hat. But for everyone else who can put up with her for that long, it provides the chance to see 94 minutes of one of America's premiere talents at her . ivnvv4, iiulllt liy Ufbl, a 5.
