WUSC wants
to boost power;
lacks money

The Federal Communications Commission has granted the
campus radio station permission to increase its power to
3,000 watts, but WUSC-FM does not have the money to make
the change.
Ron Marsh, WUSC manager, said money is the only thing
keeping the station from increasing its power. "It will take a
minimum of $31,000 for us to secure the equipment we need,"
he said.
Marsh said the power increase could come within a year if
the money could be raised. "President Holderman and I have
discussed the power increase, but no conclusion has been

sources who might be able to help us with raising money," he
said.
"THE UNIVERSITY administration will have to come to
the rescue of the radio station," said Bryan Glazer, WUSC
news director. "Right now we have the power of two CB
radios, but with the power increase, we will have the power of
WZLD.
"I think a full-time general manager should be hired to

fulfill FCC requirements and sound good, you need a general
manager. We will also need a programming format. When
you turn on WUSC-FM, you don't always know what you're
going to hear.
"We will also need a lot of new equipment," Glazer said. "1
think it will cost a minimum of $00,000." Gla/.er said the
station probably will have to pay announcers stipends.
"The university will have to bail the station out. You can't
get $00,000 in grants because money is too tight, and we can't

"I THINK the university will come to our rescue because it
has to. We will be going out over the airwaves representing
the university, and if the station is not good, it makes the
university look bad."
Glazer said he thinks the station should become commercial
so it can be self-sufficient. "It would also allow
advertising and media arts majors to get hands-on training "
