Iran: 'auick resoonse'

Hundred of thousands of Iranians shouting "Death to
American Imperialism'' marched on the U.S. Embassy in
Tehran yesterday and Iran's Foreign Ministry asked the
Carter administration for a quick resonse to its demands
for the release of the 52 U.S. hostages, beginning their
second year in captivity.
The ministry said a U.S. government note delivered by
the Swiss ambassador in Tehran Monday contained
"some provisions... which are contrary" to the demands,

The demonstrators carried placards saying "Shame on
Carter" and were joined by Iranian troops carrying their
newest weapons, merchants from Tehran's bazaar and
police helicopters dropping leaflets, the official Pars news
agency reported.
Home run king retires
TOKYO ? Sadaharu Oh, the Japanese slugger Who
belted more home runs than anyone else who ever swung
a professional baseball bat, announced today that he was
retiring after 22 seasons.
The Vomiuri Giants star bows out of the game with 868
home runs, a record that has earned him comparisons
with Hank Aaron, the all-time home run champion of the
American major leagues with 755.
The 40 vear-old Oh said at a news conference he had
decided to quit because "both spiritually and physically. I
have hit a wall."
The Giants said Oh would continue with the organization

Police search for motive
ATLANTA ? Investigators say one common
j denominator links the 11 slayings of black children that
have bewildered police and spread fear through Atlanta's
black community - the lack of any motive or tangible lead.
Members of a special police task force investigating the
deaths have sorted through thousands of tips phoned in by
citizens since a $100,000 reward was posted last month for
information leading to an arrest and conviction.
But so far, none of the tips has provided a solid lead,
authorities have said.
"All we can do is speculate." said one investigator, who
asked not to be identified. "All the theories about location,
position of the body, timing and all that don't give us
anything tangible to work on, nothing we can check out."

Families and friends of the American hostages in Iran
displayed yellow ribbons and lit candles yesterday to
mark the first anniversary of the U.S. Embassy's capture,
but some said wearily that Day 367 seemed no different
than the previous 366.
"It's just another day to be endured," said Patricia
Boggs of Elyria, Ohio, mother-in-law of hostage Joseph
Hall.
i In Los Angeles, candles were lit everv hour in the Civic
Center and giant yellow ribbons were tied around trees
lining Hollywood Boulevard.
A 24-hour candle-lighting vigil began at noon Monday.
County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn urged the crowd of 200
"to rejoice" when the hostages are released, "whether it
is an hour from now, or a day from now or a week from
now."

Wreckage found in Fla.
CHESTER ? Chester County has approved a local law
banning out-of-county chemical wastes and putting tight
controls on wastes produced and disposed inside the
I county.
"We just want the people that are involved to be
responsible," said county Attorney Paul Short.
Chester Supervisor Carlisle Roddey says the county is
prepared to take on anyone who wants to challenge the
ordinance's legality. "We will let them take us to court
and find out," he said.
"We're not interested in them coming here."
"The Chester County Council gave the law first reading
- or preliminary - approval Monday. If the law gets final
approval as expected Dec. 1, Chester will be the third
county to enact a local ordinance controlling hazardous
waste disposal.
County OKs waste ban
CHARLESTON ? The smashed wreckage of a ship
believed to be that of a commercial fishing boat missing
with four men since a storm Oct. 24 has been found about
180 miles east of Jacksonville, Fla.

separated and there was a great deal of debris," said Dan
Ravenel, part owner of Breck's Joy and a friend of the
missing skipper, Edward Burch of Charleston.
Ravenel helped coordinate volunteers who worked with
the Coast Guard in the search for the 47-foot boat, which
was out for swordfish. "We believed we covered all bases
and we found no survivors." he said.
Aboard the Breck's Joy when the storm struck were
, Burch, Osmer Bailey of Mount Pleasant and Johnny
Comerlander and David Auten, both of Folly Beach.
