But USC's Writing Center offers help for those who have difficulty writing. The Writing Center, sponsored by USC's English department, is located in Room 14 of the Humanities classroom building. It offers free instruction outside the classroom and is open to auyuue. Tom Waldrep, the center's director, said most students are referred to the center by teachers. WALDREP SAID the center employs 10 graduate students who are also staff members in the English department. "All of these graduate assistants teach in tne treshman English program," he said. "So when a student comes in, he essentially has at his disposal an English teacher for one hour. cfuHnnfc />Amn 1VA141I V OVUUV11U7 V-UUlt III on a weekly basis, and have a regular appointment time," he said. "Others choose to come in for just one or two appointments depending on how weak their writing is. "The most significant aspect of the Writing Center is the enthusiasm and dedication for teaching students who are in trouble in their classes," he said. Now the new Writing Center has expanded in size and service," Waldrep said. "We no longer serve just the university, but we are now doine seminars for government, business, industry and area teachers of English." The Writing Center has been flooded with appointments. Five different workshops were conducted during this time, Waldrep said. Some were repeated. Four workshops were held on the topic of revision and editing. WOKKSHOPS WILL be ! "However, we see many students from history, government, anthropology and nursing at all levels, including doctoral candidates." Feedback on the center's success comes from students who see the improvement, he said. But Waldrep warns students that the Writing Center "is not a remedial, first-aid or Band-Aid station. We won't 'doctor up' a student's paper to turn in to an English instructor. We will help any student whose instructor will give us a referral form."
